Trauma Therapy

woman struggling with trauma healing seeks therapist

Offering virtual therapy in New York, New Jersey, & Florida

Feel like something from your past is still quietly running the show?

The effects of trauma can feel all-consuming — but it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Trauma doesn’t always announce itself with dramatic memories or obvious flashbacks. It can live in the everyday moments—the sudden irritability, the feeling of disconnection from yourself or others, or the sense that you’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop. It can feel like your sense of self has been fractured or like you’re stuck in a loop of survival mode with no clear way out.

The good news? Healing is possible. With the right therapist—someone who understands trauma and the many ways it shows up—you can start to reclaim your sense of safety, agency, and self.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma occurs when our nervous system is overwhelmed by an experience that leaves us feeling unsafe, unseen, or powerless. It can impact how we think, how we feel in our bodies, and how we connect with others. While "big T" traumas like abuse, neglect, or violence are often easier to recognize, "little t" traumas—like emotionally unavailable caregivers, chronic invalidation, or boundary violations—can be just as impactful.

We work with clients to validate all forms of trauma. Whether your pain comes from a single event or a buildup of experiences over time, we honor the complexity of your story.

Who We Help

Offering Virtual Trauma Therapy in New York, New Jersey, & Florida.

We work with teens (14+) and adults navigating:

No matter how trauma is showing up in your life—whether it’s loud and overwhelming or quiet and confusing—we’re here to offer steady, compassionate support that honors your pace and your story.

Our Therapeutic Approach

At HLH Therapy, are relational and trauma-informed, meaning we prioritize your sense of safety, agency, and connection in every step of the work.

We integrate approaches including:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy to explore generational and family dynamics that shaped your development and sense of self.

  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to help you identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns and emotional responses.

  • Psychoeducation around trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) and how they may still be influencing your behaviors.

  • DBT techniques are integrated when additional support is needed for self-regulation and distress tolerance.

  • Harm reduction is integrated when behaviors like self-injury or disordered eating show up as coping mechanisms.

The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a place for change—offering a secure base to reprocess and reframe past pain.

What Sessions Are Like

Offering Virtual Therapy in New York, New Jersey, & Florida

Therapy sessions are held virtually and typically last 45 minutes. Most clients meet weekly, though we offer bi-weekly options depending on your goals and preferences.

In our work together, we often explore:

  • How your nervous system learned to protect you—and the ways those patterns may still be showing up (even if they no longer serve you)

  • The impact of past experiences on your current relationships, sense of self, and emotional world

  • Protective strategies like shutting down, people-pleasing, staying constantly busy, or disconnecting from your body

  • The inner conflict between wanting to heal and feeling terrified to revisit what happened

  • The difference between safety and familiarity—and how to rebuild a felt sense of safety from the inside out

  • Unspoken grief for what was lost, what was never received, or how long you’ve carried this alone

  • Moments in your life that were minimized or dismissed—but deeply impacted you

  • Small, manageable ways to reconnect with yourself, express your emotions, and begin trusting again

We also work with folks navigating trauma alongside challenges like anxiety, depression, disordered eating, or maternal mental health struggles.

Together, we’ll gently piece together your story—helping you feel more whole, grounded, and in charge of your life again.

Our Unique Approach

We start by understanding your story. What experiences shaped your current beliefs about yourself? Where are you feeling stuck? Then, we explore how those beliefs influence your day-to-day life and the way you relate to yourself and others.

Rather than focusing only on symptom management, we aim to get to the root of your pain—with curiosity, not judgment.

Collaborating with Your Support System

We believe healing can be both personal and communal. While therapy is individual, we may occasionally encourage bringing in significant others when it supports your healing.

What Clients Can Expect

Our therapy space is warm, supportive, and centered on your lived experience. You don’t have to show up with the answers—we’ll move at your pace, even on the days when everything feels heavy or hard to put into words. Over time, therapy can help you:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of how trauma has shaped your current struggles

  • Build emotional regulation skills and a stronger sense of safety in your body

  • Reconnect with parts of yourself that felt lost, minimized, or suppressed

  • Break cycles of self-sabotage, perfectionism, or emotional withdrawal

  • Grow your capacity for vulnerability and connection with others

There’s no timeline for healing from trauma, and no expectation to have it all figured out. We’ll move at your pace, honoring your story and building trust—one step at a time.

Adapting Therapy to Your Needs

Life isn’t static, and neither is therapy. We adjust our approach as your needs shift—whether that means revisiting goals, increasing session frequency during high-stress times, or drawing from different therapeutic tools to support you more fully.

Therapy Adjustments and Special Considerations

We pay close attention to how trauma responses might influence your therapy experience. If we notice signs of increased self-sabotage, emotional shutdown, or disconnection, we respond with curiosity and compassion, not judgment. We might increase session frequency or shift focus temporarily to help you feel more grounded.

We also hold space for the grief that can come with trauma recovery—the loss of time, identity, or relationships that might've been shaped by surviving rather than thriving.

Long-Term Benefits of Trauma Therapy

Over time, trauma therapy can help you:

  • Cultivate self-compassion and reduce inner criticism

  • Experience more emotional flexibility and less reactivity

  • Set and maintain healthier boundaries

  • Deepen intimacy and trust in your relationships

  • Feel more like yourself—maybe for the first time

You're not broken, even if it feels that way sometimes. You've survived things no one should have to go through. And together, we can begin the work of healing.
