Feeling stuck in a fog you just can’t shake?

Depression can take over your thoughts, your emotions, and even your sense of self — but it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Working with a therapist who understands the depth and complexity of depression can help you untangle the roots of your pain and move toward a life that feels more meaningful, manageable, and connected.

Understanding Depression

Depression doesn’t always look like sadness. It can show up as irritability, numbness, low motivation, hopelessness, or a heavy disconnection from the people and things that used to matter most. Depression is not a personal failure or a lack of willpower—it’s a complex emotional and physical state influenced by many different factors.

Who We Help

Offering Virtual Depression Therapy in New York, New Jersey, & Florida.

We work with individuals aged 16 and older. Our clients often include those who are:

  • Struggling with low mood, emptiness, or numbness

  • Finding it difficult to function in daily life—things like getting out of bed, preparing meals, or staying on top of work

  • Experiencing passive suicidal thoughts

  • Navigating harmful coping strategies like self-harm, isolation, or disordered eating

  • Overwhelmed by self-critical thoughts or a sense of being a burden

  • Feeling stuck in unsatisfying relationships or work environments

  • Wondering who they are or what gives life meaning anymore

No matter how depression is showing up in your life, we’re here to offer grounded, compassionate support that meets you where you are.

Our Therapeutic Approach

At HLH Therapy, we are relational therapists who believe that healing happens through authentic connection. Depression can leave you feeling alone in your own mind. We’re here to help you unpack the internal dialogue, explore where those thoughts came from, and gently challenge the ones that no longer serve you. Our work is individualized, drawing from:

  • Psychodynamic therapy helps us explore a client's upbringing, relationships, and attachments to understand how past experiences shape current emotional states, strengths, and struggles.

  • Narrative therapy helps to externalize and rewrite painful stories that clients may be holding about themselves.

  • Trauma-Informed CBT allows us to recognize how past experiences influence current worries, self-perception, and expectations of oneself and others.

  • DBT techniques are integrated when additional support is needed for self-regulation and distress tolerance.

  • Harm reduction is integrated when behaviors like self-injury or disordered eating show up as coping mechanisms.

We tailor your therapy based on your unique needs, story, and goals—never taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

What Sessions Are Like

Offering Virtual Therapy in New York, New Jersey, & Florida

Therapy sessions are held virtually and typically last 45 minutes. Most clients meet weekly, though we offer bi-weekly options depending on your goals and preferences.

In our work together, we often explore:

  • The origins of your self-critical or hopeless thoughts

  • How early life experiences may have shaped the way you see yourself and the world

  • Patterns in relationships that reinforce feelings of worthlessness or isolation

  • The emotional function of behaviors like withdrawing, numbing, or self-harming

  • The inner conflict between wanting things to change and feeling too exhausted to try

  • Daily barriers to functioning (like showering, eating, or getting out of bed)—and what those moments might be communicating

  • Your core values and what makes life feel meaningful, even in small ways

  • Safer ways to cope, ask for support, and show up for yourself when you're struggling

We also support clients who may be navigating depression alongside other challenges like anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, or grief.

Together, we’ll gently untangle what’s weighing you down—making space for a version of you that feels more connected, capable, and at home in yourself.

Our Unique Approach

We start by understanding your story. What experiences shaped your current beliefs about yourself? Where are you feeling stuck? Then, we explore how those beliefs influence your day-to-day life and the way you relate to yourself and others.

Rather than focusing only on symptom management, we aim to get to the root of your pain—with curiosity, not judgment.

Collaborating with Your Support System

When appropriate, we may recommend adjunct sessions with a partner, close friend, or family member. These can offer insight into how depression is showing up outside of the therapy room and help us build a stronger network of support around you. We’ll also explore whether medication could be a helpful support in addition to therapy, and we’ll work collaboratively with psychiatrists when appropriate.

What Clients Can Expect

Our therapy space is warm, supportive, and centered on your lived experience. You don’t have to show up with the answers—we’ll move at your pace, even on the days when everything feels heavy or hard to put into words. Over time, therapy can help you:

  • Understand the roots of your depression and how it’s shaped your self-perception

  • Identify and shift patterns that reinforce hopelessness, self-criticism, or shame

  • Build healthier routines around sleep, nutrition, and daily care

  • Cultivate deeper self-compassion and emotional awareness

  • Reconnect with a sense of meaning, motivation, and possibility

There’s no right or wrong way to show up to therapy. We’ll start with where you are, and walk through it—together.

Adapting Therapy to Your Needs

We know depression can ebb and flow. If your symptoms change, we’ll shift with you. This might mean adjusting the structure of our sessions, revisiting goals, or incorporating more frequent check-ins.

Our approach is flexible, responsive, and always guided by what’s most helpful for you.

Therapy Adjustments and Special Considerations

For clients experiencing suicidal ideation or engaging in harmful coping strategies like cutting, bingeing, or isolation, we approach these experiences with care—not shame. Together, we’ll explore what these behaviors are trying to express or soothe, and find safer ways to meet those needs. If at any point we believe you’d benefit from a higher level of care, we’ll talk openly and support you through that transition.

Long-Term Benefits of Depression Therapy

With consistent therapeutic support for depression, clients often experience profound and lasting shifts, such as:

  • A stronger, more compassionate sense of self

  • Greater capacity for joy, connection, and emotional presence

  • Improved relationships with friends, family, and partners

  • More energy and motivation for daily life

  • A clearer understanding of their needs, limits, and values

  • Reduced self-harm and safer coping tools

  • A renewed sense of meaning and direction

You're not broken. You're carrying a lot. Therapy can be the place where you start to lay some of that weight down. Let’s work together to help you feel more like you again.
